Introducing Ian Ward Stonemason….

Ian Ward has worked as a stonemason and carver over the last forty years. His career has included many notable restoration projects such as Windsor Castle and Stirling Castle, numerous large and small church projects and many country houses including the grand likes of Althorp House and Ragley Hall.  He has taught stone carving courses at Guggleton Studios for the past ten years.

The course…

Suitable for all levels of ability and experience (including beginner), this course offers tuition in one of mankind’s oldest art forms: stone carving. It will showcase the intricacies of this most subtle and challenging art form, with the eventual goal of enabling you to design and produce your own carved piece of stone work to take home. Under the guidance of a master mason with a lifetime’s experience, you will gain insight into the rich and rewarding rigors of the craft and feel the satisfaction of completing your own small piece of the art that is made to last.

Basic tools will of course be provided, although experienced students are very welcome to bring their own. The Stone provided will primarily be Bath Stone sourced from Hartham Park’s underground quarry, this eye pleasing and easy to work stone is recommended for beginners and those seeking a more enjoyable and informative experience. Alternatively, Portland stone can be provided for those perhaps more advanced students looking to grapple with a much less accommodating material to test their abilities.

Home comforts…

You can bring your own lunch, tea and coffee will be provided, or….
