Fernhill is a working family farm rearing top quality breeding stock, terminal sires, meat, wool and eggs alongside our fresh green garden produce
Home to a multitude of micro-organisms, many rare species are found here and our land is blossoming as we holistically manage our orchard, woodlands, hedgerows, natural ponds and gardens to create beautiful, useful habitats for our animals and the local wildlife.
Following the conservation aims of the Countryside Stewardship Scheme and the Higher Level Entry Scheme we continue our mission to preserve, protect and share our productive farmland.
We use nature’s natural responses first to treat weeds, diseases and ailments.
The beef cows and calves are over-wintered here at the farm after spending the long summer days conservation grazing the Somerset Wildlife Trust old Roman Hill Fort, Dolebury Warren.
Shetland ewes also spend the Autumn months on top of these hills feasting on flavoursome herbs ready for the tupping season in November. April lambing, and calving in mid-Summer ensure our fields come alive with the sounds of motherhood.
Incorporating Fernhill as the maternal safe base, all our sheep and cows become efficient land management tools when travelling around the Mendip hills at various times of the year seeking fresh clean pastures. We believe soil activity is an essential element for the health of our struggling planet. Thus, large mobs graze intensively for short periods to time to create a natural grazing system.
